      <image:title>Uwa Library - Lactation Laws - 1. Almost all breastfeeding employees are covered. The PUMP Act extends coverage to ~9 million more women of childbearing age who were not previously covered under the 2010 federal Break Time for Nursing Mothers law. Now employers must support all employees for one year following the birth of a child including healthcare workers, salaried employees, teachers, and more. Unfortunately at this time certain employees of airlines, railroads, and motorcoach carriers are exempt from nursing employee protections under the FLSA.</image:title>
      <image:caption>2. Employers must provide reasonable break time.The law does not specify or limit the amount of break time required for pumping. As every mother is different in her frequency or duration needed to adequately pump, the law makes accommodation for variations in biology.</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>

      <image:title>Uwa Library - Lactation Laws - 4. Paid to Pump. The law clarifies compensation structure ensuring that if an employee is still working, any break time taken to pump is considered hours worked and compensated accordingly.</image:title>
      <image:caption>5. Includes the right to sue. The PUMP Act grants breastfeeding employees the right to file a lawsuit against their employer for non-compliance if the following steps have been taken: Employer has been notified that they’re not in compliance. The employer then has 10 days to comply. Employees are not required to give employers 10 days to report non-space violations such as harassment or violations of break time.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Uwa Library - Infant Dehydration - Our bodies however do not have a way of storing backup water when needed. For this reason, fluid intake is more important in the short term than food energy intake. That can be hard as a parent when your little one is refusing food but try to remember, water is life.</image:title>

      <image:title>Uwa Library - Infant Dehydration - Urine color can also tell us a lot about how well hydrated your baby is. Normally your baby’s urine should be a clear to light yellow color. Darker urine or stronger smelling urine can indicate more concentrated urine meaning less fluid in the body.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Brick dust urine: Newborns may sometimes pee a red, pink or peach colored powdery or dusty substance against the diaper. This is called brick dust urine. The color of the urine is due to a type of chemical normally found in urine called urate. When there is not enough fluid in the urine, urate may form crystals that cause the color change. This is usually seen in the first few weeks of life. Increasing the amount of breast milk or formula your baby is drinking will help decrease the urate crystals.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Uwa Library - Nutrition for Lactation - Fenugreek, blessed thistle, fennel and alfalfa possess phytoestrogens.</image:title>
      <image:caption>It is believed that phytoestrogens may mimic how your body’s estrogen causes production and release of prolactin. These can be added to shakes, teas or other foods to make them easier to ingest. Oats are an easily accessible whole grain also thought to increase milk supply although this has not been consistently supported by research. It is believed that oats help to correct maternal iron levels which have been shown to have correlation between low milk supply.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Uwa Library - Nutrition for Lactation - Most families do not have the luxury of support systems that can routinely cook balanced nutritious meals for them while they recover during the postpartum period. New parents rely heavily on food delivery options or are at the mercy of eating food that is either prepared or dropped off by others. While well intentioned, these meals can be heavily processed and high in calories that won’t support lactation.</image:title>

      <image:title>Uwa Library - Practical Postpartum Planning - Congratulations! You’ve just had your bundle of joy and have finally settled into your new routine. You’re figuring out feeding your baby, your baby is growing well and doing all the newborn things, and you are so relieved. The only problem is that you feel terrible. We know, we’ve been there! You are tired all the time, you can't seem to find time to bathe or sleep, much less time to prepare nutritious meals for yourself. You’re butting heads with your partner or taking on all the burden of your new rhythm. You find that you are eating foods that you normally wouldn’t out of convenience or struggling to balance out basic chores and rest. You are not alone. Most new parents find it difficult to maneuver through self-care while transitioning into parenthood. Start preparing for the fourth trimester as you did for the arrival of your baby with our practical postpartum planning tips.</image:title>
