About our name
As a Nigerian Dr. Kwaji grew up in a culture where people are taught to look to their villages to guide and ground them no matter where they are in life. The heart and foundation of villages are the mothers, as the ones who guide the future and preserve the past. The word Uwa (ooo-wah), meaning mother in Dr.Kwaji’s native tongue of Hausa, embodies that essence.

Uwa Founder, Pediatric Urgent Care Physician and Mommy to 3
In 2018 while working as a pediatric urgent care physician I started my journey into motherhood and struggled through high risk pregnancies, delivery complications, and what I assumed was a typical postpartum recovery and parenthood. Those toddler years are rough no matter your background and I was shocked by the lack of support as I struggled through self care and the constant pivoting required in motherhood. So much time was wasted on where to find information my medical training lacked, how to access it, and who to trust. Three kids later and with my perspective as a pediatrician, urgent care physician and a mother, I am now the “phone a friend” for many of the mothers in my community, giving peace of mind where needed.
Every parent should be able to have that experience every time but traditional on call pediatricians are frequently overwhelmed in patient needs and short on time and staff. Through Uwa, I wanted to give parents another option for direct access to approachable evidence-based support in those moments when you just need a knowledgeable friend with experience. Parenthood is an endless journey of learning how to become the type of parent you want to be and it helps to have a friend along that journey.
